Here’s what we’re covering in this week’s questions:
Thank you for being here.
Now on to the questions!
Q: I hope you get this question Nurse Doza! I was just told to start taking vitamin D every day. I have Epstein-Barr, and the low energy and brain fog really affect me at work. I’ve been living like this for years. Is vitamin D the only thing I need? I’ve been to so many doctors, and nothing has helped.”
A: Nurse Doza: Don’t give up. Yes, taking vitamin D will help but you are right, it might not be enough. When it comes to autoimmune disorders, there needs to be a plan to support the entire body.
Autoimmune issues start with Vitamin D deficiency mixed with a previous infection (viral, bacterial, etc.). The previous infection, like herpes or mono, enters the body and “lives” in an organ like the thyroid, liver or even the nervous system. The infection comes “out” when the person is stressed (an exacerbation). Most people are vitamin D deficient, which compromises their immune system and leaves them vulnerable to more autoimmune exacerbations and the development of more autoimmune issues like Hashimoto’s (thyroid autoimmune), PANDAS (strep induced brain inflammation) or even Epstein Barr.
All your health starts in your gut and it’s possible the previous autoimmune issue infection entered the body by way of leaky gut (think of all the bread we have eaten before that opened up holes in the gut for the infections to enter). Every single health issue, including any autoimmune issue, can benefit from a healthier gut and a detoxed liver. The gut needs to be repaired from all those “leaky holes” and the liver makes antioxidants that can reduce inflammation in any autoimmune issue. Keep it simple, start the supplements at GOODPOOPS.org which were designed to help address gut, liver and gallbladder issues, even if you are missing a gallbladder (a lot of people with autoimmune issues are missing a gallbladder).
We have addressed many autoimmune issues successfully in our clinic with this approach. Recheck your labs, monitor your symptoms and hopefully after a few months and years, you will have less autoimmune “flare ups” and you can live a life full of energy, deep sleep and no pain. As a person with two autoimmune issues, I can personally testify that this autoimmune protocol really, really works. Just be sure to follow a healthy diet (Mediterranean, Paleo, Keto), and cut back on any inflammatory stressors you don’t need in your life (alcohol, spouses, sugar, work, frenemies, etc.).

Q: Nurse Doza can you help with thyroid issues? Is there anything you could recommend for hypothyroidism? The joint and muscle pain are debilitating.
A: Nurse Doza: I have seen a lot of thyroid issues come through the clinic over the years. What I have learned is usually thyroid issues do not start in the thyroid. It usually starts with stress and over active adrenal glands.
Thyroid issues get better with adrenal support. The adrenals glands are the first stress response in the body. They release cortisol, norepinephrine, and some dopamine which gives us the focus needed to handle stress (think a quick and calm response under stress). Cortisol can lower thyroid hormone production which can make the thyroid under active (hypothyroidism) and raise TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone, the lab test ordered for thyroid issues).
⬆️cortisol → ⬇️thyroid (⬆️TSH) = hypothyroid
I have seen adrenal support (stress management) lower cortisol, thus allowing the thyroid to not work as hard. I would implement working on lowering cortisol to help the thyroid.
How to help the adrenals, to support the thyroid:
Belly breathing, daily
Less nighttime light (TVs, phones, laptops, etc)
More time outside
Morning sunlight
Going to bed sooner
Start our ZEN supplement (it literally bovine adrenal gland which has nutrients needed to support our adrenals).
Red light therapy (use code nursedoza)
One more thing about the thyroid, the liver helps regulate thyroid hormones. I often recommend our ZEN & LIVER BOOST for anyone with thyroid issues. Take them for 3 months and recheck theses labs:
TSH
Free T3
Total T3
Total T4
Free T4
TPO (thyroid peroxidase)
DHEA-s (overall adrenal function)
Cortisol
Q: Nurse Doza, can we talk more about PCOS and how it correlates with digestive issues? I have painful periods every month and I am bloated after every meal. Is there a connection and what can I do?
A: Nurse Doza: There is a connection. And there is something you can do.
I believe PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) is a hormonal disorder that starts in the digestive tract. There is a living environment called our microbiome in our digestive tract that contains bacteria, viruses, fungi and even parasites. Most of these pathogens are good as they protect us. There is even a section of this microbiome called the Estrobolom, which contains enzymes that help regulate estrogen. If there is a digestive history of bloating, constipation, diarrhea, acid reflux, leaky gut, gallbladder surgery, fatty liver or anything more serious, it can directly impact the microbiome and Estrobolome. Repairing the gut and restoring the gut microbiome is a must and might take a few years but you will be healthier for it with less painful periods. Now the next step is also needed to reverse PCOS, which is very possible.
PCOS is an insulin resistance disorder of the ovaries. Remember, there are insulin receptors throughout the body and when insulin is high, it not only causes diabetes, it can cause PCOS. Instead of getting diabetes, a poor diet caused diabetes of the ovaries. When insulin is high, estrogen goes low.
⬆️insulin = ⬇️estrogen
Lowering insulin can help PCOS and can be noticed in labs, imaging, and monthly cycles. Fasting, a liver detox, Resveratol, cold exposure, Berberine and cutting back on grains & sugar can all lower insulin. This could be a new lifestyle, but all of this has helped women in our clinic with PCOS throughout the years. I hope it helps you too, and if not, I am just a click away.
