Hello wonderful community! The holidays are just around the corner which means everyone needs to focus on staying healthy. This week’s newsletter is designed to do just that by providing answers to the health questions you ask online and in person (Yes, these are real questions asked by you!)

Before we get started, I wanted to tell you about the mentorship program we have in the online School of Doza. Next month will be the 3rd cohort of our Holistic Practitioner Program. For 8 weeks, I will teach you everything I know about being a holistic practitioner and running your own business. You’ll also receive one-on-one coaching, sales and marketing strategies, and the tools to build a thriving practice—or simply restore your own health. Click here to learn more and join Early Access.

Here’s what we’re covering in this week’s questions:

  • Fibromyalgia & Trauma: Why stress can trigger flare-ups

  • Fatty Liver & NAC: What really works for detox

  • Migraines: Supplements that calm the brain

Thank you for being here. Now on to the questions!

Somewhere along the way, health became fragmented.
Labs over symptoms. Protocols over patterns.
And a lot of smart, well-meaning people were left feeling like something didn’t add up.

If that’s been your experience — in your own body or in your work — this session might bring some clarity.

Nurse Doza will be sharing the exact approach he uses in clinic to connect the dots between digestion, hormones, energy, and mood — especially in cases where nothing else has worked.

No fluff. No hype. Just the part most of us were never taught.

Q: Nurse Doza, I saw your video about cutting out bread to help with inflammation. How can I break my addiction to bread? It’s soooo hard!! I know you said that bread doesn't really have any nutrition but I've eaten it my whole life. I do feel better when I don’t eat it but is this something I have to give up for the rest of my life? Bread is everywhere!

A: Nurse Doza: Bread is comfort food. So is pasta and rice. Today’s bread is not the same type of bread as it was in biblical times nor is every bread around the world the same (I know this because people who travel to Italy tell me they have no problems eating bread over there).

Bread turns into sugar when we eat it. Very inflammatory sugar that can directly cause damage to your digestive tract as soon as you eat it. Over-eating bread at every meal is a quick way to develop high blood sugar in the gut which can lead to numerous health issues such as diabetes, leaky gut, fatty liver, gallbladder removal, colon cancer and even dementia (remember, the gut is the body’s “2nd brain”). Bread is also so inflammatory that there is a direct connection between bread and such autoimmune disorders like Hashimoto's.

What happens when we cut our bread from our diet? Our health gets better. I understand it’s “hard” to give up, but how do you feel an hour after eating bread? Cutting out bread will be hard for a few months, but when your inflammation and weight starts to go down, you will not look back. Especially in the future when you finally decide to eat bread again because it will cause so much inflammation that you will not eat it again (no one likes to be bloated).

But how can we “replace” bread? What else besides bread makes you just as “happy”? What besides food makes a person happy? The real reason we eat food is that it gives us dopamine. Dopamine is a hormone/neurotransmitter that gives us pleasure & reward. Dopamine is a double edged sword because it also gives up focus & motivation. Our "favorite" foods tend to give us lots of dopamine, but those foods can also be the source of our inflammation. My goal with autoimmune disorders, gut issues and even weight gain is to reduce inflammation which means cutting out inflammatory foods like bread. If there is resistance to this diet change, the person is not “addicted” to bread. They are “addicted” to the way bread makes them dopamine after a few bites. That individual really needs a healthier way to get dopamine naturally. Once you start doing this, not only will you be able to give up bread for good, but you might be able to cut back or eliminate other comfort foods like sugar, salty foods, dairy, sodas and even alcohol. You deserve to feel better. Bread isn’t the answer.

How to make healthy dopamine:

  • Exercise

  • Healthy Protein

  • Sunlight

  • Music

  • Talking to a best friend

  • Hugs

  • Creativity (painting, writing, drawing, etc.)

  • Fasting (24hrs-36hrs)

Q:  I need your help Nurse Doza! I get sick all the time! Last year I got sick 5 times and now with school starting up, I’m worried that my kids are going to get sick and maybe make me sick. I cannot afford to be sick again that much. What should I do?

A: Nurse Doza:  Being sick is costly. You lose time, money, work, fun, and travel. Then once it's over, most need to play “catch up” on work or play harder to avoid FOMO (fear of missing out). Being sick means our body is telling us to slow down or stop completely.

Stress reduces our immune system. Stress is inevitable but when stress is really high is when a person is more prone to becoming sick. Germs, bad food and alcohol are always there. Why do we get sick at certain times? It’s because the week leading up had more stress than any other week and our bodies were not prepared. Most people experience less sunlight, poor sleep and already have low vitamin D, which can all be a recipe for disaster. If that person also has a poor functioning gut and/or has been stuck in “flight or fight” mode (too much cortisol) then that individual already has a suppressed immune system and can be more likely to get sick when stress is too high (I saw this happen every week in the clinic and especially during the COVID years).

How to improve your immune system (so you don’t get sick all the time):

  1. Morning sunlight. (10-20 mins daily)

  2. Vitamin D3 5000iu daily- this is your immune system!

  3. Fix your gut  - your gut is where health begins

  4. Get out of “fight or fight” mode - this podcast is a “stress management” episode

  5. Support your liver  - it helps reduce inflammation & toxins in the body

  6. Make sleep a priority - sleep is when our body recovers from stress

Q: Nurse Doza, I need help! I have been so tired lately. No energy. No focus. Caffeine doesn’t help and my sleep is definitely off. Some people say this happens with age but I’m only 45! Am I going to have to suffer with this the rest of my life? Getting old feels terrible!

A: Nurse Doza: I imagine you are having a hard time keeping up with life. No energy can do that. We need to figure out what could be causing this.

Possible causes of low energy:

  • Stuck in constant “flight or fight” mode - being stressed all the time is exhausting. Especially at the end of the day and the start of a new day.

  • Low nutrients - Vitamin B9, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Vitamin C

  • Genetic issues -  MTHFR, COMT, APOE

  • Hormone imbalances -  Estrogen, Testosterone, Insulin, Leptin, Cortisol, Thyroid

  • Inflammation - chronic, autoimmune, digestive

  • Poor sleep

  • Uncontrolled blood sugar

As you can see, there can be many causes. One thing is for sure…we are not deficient in caffeine.

Steps to Rebuild Energy:

  1. Get daily, morning sunlight (10-20 mins)

  2. Wait to have caffeine at least 90 minutes after waking

  3. Lots of water

  4. More healthy protein & fats, less processed carbs and sugars

  5. Fasting -  24hr-36hrs weekly or monthly

  6. 15-20 mins of “legs on the wall yoga” pose

  7. Cold exposure - the goal is to shiver!

  8. Red light therapy

  9. Binaural beats

  10. Diaphragmatic belly breathing - it’s calming energy

    1. use the School of Doza’s “Rule of 4”:

      1. inhale for 4 secs (through the nose)

      2. hold for 4 secs (through the nose)

      3. exhale for 4 secs (through the nose)

      4. repeat 4 times

  11. Do something fulfilling everyday. If you don’t know where to start, start by learning about a new hobby, language, skill or mystery.

Supplements to Support Energy:

If you are still having issues with energy after trying this list, let's book a consult to chat more and get to the bottom of this!

Your questions are proof that health struggles are connected. Bread cravings, frequent illness, and low energy may seem different, but they often share the same root: inflammation and stress overload.

With the right support, these cycles can be broken.

To your health,
Nurse Doza
